My inspiration tank is a little empty tonight so I googled 'blogging topics' and clicked on the first link. Nothing really grabbed me by the throat and said, "OH MY GOODNESS, YOU MUST WRITE ABOUT THAT NOW BEFORE THE WORLD ENDS!" However, I noticed that over and over the topic of social networking, media, and advertising kept repeating itself with a little different twist each time. I'm thinking that it wasn't by accident that I kept seeing this topic come to the surface. God has a way of putting things right in front of me in order to make me ponder things carefully.
Every generation struggles with idols and things that take their focus off the things that should be the most important; however, this generation is going to have to work extremely hard to keep their priorities straight. Everything in this world is right at our fingertips and just a click away. Instant gratification is at an all-time high. We have personal debt as well as national debt.
On the plus side, the possibilities for reaching souls for Christ is endless in this wonderful age of technology, but I worry about this generation becoming so secluded from real flesh-feeling human contact that our souls begin to starve. Already, I watch teenagers and young adults sit and text for hours without any real human interaction. I'm guilty of spending so much time on the internet that I lose precious moments with my children - time that I could be using to teach them about really living and serving others. I justify too much time on the internet as a way to relax after a hard day when I should be accomplishing more important things. I allow it to stand in my way of reaching goals.
I can only change my habits and pray that my children will grow up with a healthy balance in their lives. So, I am going to commit to reducing the time I spend each day on-line and replacing it with something productive. After all, they will model my behavior.
Blessings,
Penny Fell
